Shortly after Haiti was struck with a devastating earthquake in early 2010, Spacenet Integrated Government Solutions offered its services to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief effort. With the local communications infrastructure disrupted by the quake, Spacenet, along with partner Echostar Satellite Services, sent small satellite dish antennas and two-way ground stations to Haiti.

I just read an interesting article that discusses whether or not landlords can restrict renters from using satellite dishes on the rental property. In 1996, the FCC “adopted rules for over-the-air reception devices. The rules prohibit restrictions on a property owner or tenant’s right to install, maintain or use an antenna to receive video programming from direct broadcast satellites, broadband radio services and television broadcast stations. However, there are exceptions to the rules.” The article goes on to say that landlords can prohibit renters from drilling holes in walls or mounting satellite dishes in certain places. The Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association is sitting happy in Omaha right now as they overcame a proposed city council fee on inspecting satellite dishes. Councilman Chris Jerram first proposed this fee after some of his constituents complained about the proliferation of satellite dishes around town.
