Can landlords restrict satellite dishes?
I just read an interesting article that discusses whether or not landlords can restrict renters from using satellite dishes on the rental property. In 1996, the FCC “adopted rules for over-the-air reception devices. The rules prohibit restrictions on a property owner or tenant’s right to install, maintain or use an antenna to receive video programming from direct broadcast satellites, broadband radio services and television broadcast stations. However, there are exceptions to the rules.” The article goes on to say that landlords can prohibit renters from drilling holes in walls or mounting satellite dishes in certain places. Keep this in mind next time you are looking for a new apartment or rental house. You should ask the landlord about his or her policy on satellite dishes before signing a contract.
