Satellite Dishes in Haiti Earthquake Relief

March 7th, 2010 by admin | Filed under news

Shortly after Haiti was struck with a devastating earthquake in early 2010, Spacenet Integrated Government Solutions offered its services to the American Red Cross to aid in the relief effort. With the local communications infrastructure disrupted by the quake, Spacenet, along with partner Echostar Satellite Services, sent small satellite dish antennas and two-way ground stations to Haiti.

These satellite dishes and equipment allowed relief workers and organizations to get telecommunications access such as phone and internet very quickly. It took about two weeks for Spacenet employee volunteers to set up the satellite dishes and related equipment in several locations to optimize the telecommunications access for relief efforts. Here is one article that discusses Omar Rafik’s involvement in this courageous endeavor to bring satellite dishes to the rescue.
